FedEx Corp. announced a partnership with Nuro, one of the leading autonomous vehicle companies in the U.S., to trial the use of autonomous vehicles for multistop and appointment-based deliveries in Houston.
Nuro’s R2 vehicle, which is the first completely driverless delivery vehicle to gain regulatory approval from the U.S. Department of Transportation to operate on public roads, will be making the deliveries.
It sports many innovative features that are not found on manually driven vehicles, such as the lack of side-view mirrors. This results in the narrower size of the R2 vehicle, freeing up more space on the street for other motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
The R2 vehicle also lacks a front windshield, allowing it to collapse inward in the event of a collision and limit damage to anything struck by the vehicle. Nuro’s partnership with FedEx is their first foray into parcel delivery.
According to Cosimo Leipold, Nuro’s head of partnerships, he shares that, “Working with FedEx — the global leader in logistics — is an incredible opportunity to rethink every aspect of local delivery,” with their multiyear contract allowing them to “truly collaborate and bring Nuro’s powerful technology to more people in new ways, and eventually reach large-scale deployment.”
