“November is Native American Heritage Month”

While the first American Indian Day was celebrated in May 1916 in New York, in 1990, November was designated “National American Indian Heritage Month” by then-President George H.W. Bush and similar proclamations have been issued every year since 1994.
Now called “American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month” or Native American Heritage Month this year’s Proclamation by President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. contains the following passage:
“Despite a painful history marked by unjust Federal policies of assimilation and termination, American Indian and Alaska Native peoples have persevered. During National Native American Heritage Month, we celebrate the countless contributions of Native peoples past and present, honor the influence they have had on the advancement of our Nation, and recommit ourselves to upholding trust and treaty responsibilities, strengthening Tribal sovereignty, and advancing Tribal self-determination.”
According to the U.S. Census Bureau here are some statistics for American Indians and Alaska Natives, one of the six major race categories defined by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget.
The nation’s American Indian and Alaska Native population alone or in combination with other race groups in 2020.
The projected American Indian and Alaska Native population alone or in combination with other race groups on July 1, 2060. They would constitute 2.5% of the total population.
The number of distinct, federally recognized American Indian reservations in 2020, including federal reservations and off-reservation trust land.
The number of federally recognized Indian tribes in 2020.
The number of single-race American Indian and Alaska Native veterans of the U.S. armed forces in 2019.
